Laser skin treatment is known by several names such as laser skin resurfacing, laser peel, lasabrasion and laser vaporization. While a relatively new method for treating skin conditions, it is quickly become the main tool of dermatological surgeons around the world and is used for condition such as wrinkles, acne scars, warts, skin cancer and wine stains.

Laser skin resurfacing involves vaporizing skin layers. As a result, you will need to take care of your skin after the procedure. Here is some information about what to expect.

Each individual’s skin will react in various ways to laser skin treatments. The most common experience is that the skin feels like it has been moderately burnt by the sun. You will likely find that the skin will have some swelling and will be red. The redness is in fact the fresh, new skin that has appeared after the top layer has been removed. After 12 to 72 hours, you might experience itching or stinging. After 5 to 7 days, the skin may become dry and start to peel

A sterile dressing will be applied to the skin that has been treated. You will need to wear this dressing for around 1 to 3 days and clean the skin 2 to 4 times day with saline or diluted vinegar. Vasline, Aquaphor or Eurcerin also needs to be put on the wound. The idea behind this type of after treatment care is to avoid the formation of scabs.

Between 10 to 21 days the skin will be healed. After this time, there may be some temporary reddening of the skin which can be covered by makeup.

After this time, you should apply sunscreen to the skin daily to protect the new skin. You should use the strongest sun cream that you can find. Moisturize the area for six weeks after the treatment to aid in healing.
