Do Lawyer Reviews Online Provide Any Help?
In this day and age of Google and the Internet, it is almost impossible not to learn first hand about the experiences someone has had with a group or individual. What I’m talking about is the consumer review. You can find them everywhere – reviews on criminal attorneys, the best camera, business lawyers, plumbers, dentists, and the best railroad accident attorney for you. You can find it all online.
But are lawyer reviews online any help? Can you trust them? Let’s talk about it a little bit.
First, like anything on the internet, you have to be a little bit skeptical about who it came from and what the primary motivation is. What I mean is, anyone can get on the internet and write anything about anything and say anything about anyone. There isn’t any true way to verify what is being said. So, rule number one is to take it all with a grain of salt.
Second, though, is that there is usually some truth to most of the review written out there. For example, if you see a bunch of lawyer reviews online for a certain attorney or law firm and they are all bad, that probably isn’t a good sign. There are some people that are never satisfied with anything, but if there are a lot that should be a warning sign.
And, finally, just as you shouldn’t take all the bad at face value, you shouldn’t take all the good at face value either. I know personally of some law firms out there that post their one lawyer reviews online about themselves. Now, while most are about real clients and real cases that have had good outcomes, the fact remains that there are false reviews out there.
While online reviews are a good resource, they should never take the place of how you feel about the situation yourself. Meet with a couple of lawyers, ask them the questions you want answered, and get them answered. That is the only true way to make sure you are getting the right person for you.
