Outdoor Flood Lights and Safety Habits

Whether you’re a small woman or a kickboxing bodybuilder, you need to have your safety and security on your mind. This holds true whether you’re at home or out and about. Even if you feel you could defend yourself against an attacker, preventing one from attempting to harm or rob you in the first place is the best option.

Outdoor flood lights at your home are one way to rest a little easier when you have to go outside after dark. While you shouldn’t spend time being afraid of the outdoors at night, it’s a wise decision to make sure there aren’t any places at your home where someone could hide. Look for spots that are completely in shadow at night where someone could conceal himself from you as you go from your car to your door or vice versa. You can eliminate shrubs and bushes that would allow someone to hide behind them, or simply light them better.

A would-be-criminal is much less likely to try to break into a home that’s well-lit at night, just as he’s much less likely to try to attack or rob someone between their car and home if the area is bright. Thieves like dark places with plenty of shadows to hide in. An area that’s illuminated with an outdoor flood light makes it harder for them to get around unseen, so they’ll go on to another home that’s less well-protected.

There are some places that remain risky no matter how well-lit your home is. Even if you have a car alarm and flood lights, always glance in the back seat of your vehicle before you get into it. Make this a habit so that you do it without even thinking about it. Have the proper key in your hand and ready to use whether you’re going out to your vehicle, you’re getting out of your vehicle and going to your front door, or you’re heading to your car from a store or place of business. This will minimize the time you spend outside in the dark and put you less at risk.
